We Survived Eclampsia & Placental Abruption

I started having swelling at 20 weeks and had slightly elevated blood pressures from my very first OB appointment. I told my doctor I was concerned at my 34 week appointment but she assured me that what I was experiencing was normal. The morning my seizures started I was 35 weeks + 4 days. I woke up feeling like I was catching a cold and had a lot of sinus pressure. I remember getting into bed that night & telling my husband I didn’t believe I could make it another month feeling as miserable as I did. The next thing I knew I woke up in the ICU on a ventilator 2 days later. I was told that I had 2 eclamptic seizures, an emergency c-section, and my son was in the NICU. The seizures had caused placental abruption, and my son needed cooling therapy to prevent any further possible brain injury. The mix of emotions I felt hearing all of this for the first time was overwhelming. I wanted to get up and run to the NICU, but my body was so tired all I could do was sleep. Meeting my baby for the first time was the most surreal experience. I spent 7 days in the hospital and my son was in the NICU for 16 days. We are so grateful that our son is now a happy and healthy 7 month old and my blood pressures seem to be returning to normal. I just wish I had trusted my instincts and advocated harder for myself with my doctor.
