My Story With Hellp Syndrome

At 25 weeks gestation, I began having very strong pains that felt like really bad indigestion. The pain never subsided and became unbearable. I went to L&D triage and was admitted with HELLP Syndrome. The pain I was feeling was from my liver. I was told I had to deliver within 24 hours. I was started on magnesium and had blood drawn every few hours. I made it about 15 hours when they told me I had to have an emergency Csection. My daughter was born at 25 weeks, 4 days and weighed 1 pound .6 ounces. She was diagnosed with IUGR, and I had thankfully had steroid shots prior to delivery to help her lungs. Almost immediately after delivery, my labs started to return to normal. I was extremely swollen and bruised. I feel very fortunate that I was so closely monitored. I was very close to losing my life. My daughter staying in the NICU 177 days. Today she is healthy and happy! We are a one and done family. My birth and NICU experiences were too traumatic for us to have another baby. While HELLP may have taken away my dream of a big family, I can’t help but feel so grateful that my daughter and I are both alive and healthy!
