In Memoriam: Chris Redman, MD, Author, Researcher, and Advocate

Chris-Redman.jpg (114 KB)It is with great sadness that the Preeclampsia Foundation team learned about the passing on August 13, 2024 of Professor Christopher Redman, a premier preeclampsia researcher, clinician, and advocate for women's health in the UK. In addition to his many research accolades, Dr. Redman was the co-founder, alongside preeclampsia survivor and patient advocate Isobel Walker, of the UK patient advocacy organization, Action on Pre-Eclampsia (APEC).

As a trailblazer in the field of preeclampsia, Professor Redman began his career at the Department of the Regius Professor of Medicine in 1970. Working in worked in the field of Obstetric Medicine, he investigated the pathogenesis, detection, prevention and treatment of preeclampsia. He not only discovered a groundbreaking understanding of the inflammatory pathways of preeclampsia, he co-authored the first English patient guide to preeclampsia in 1992 with Isobel Walker. (His most recent patient guide, "Understanding Pre-Eclampsia" from Oxford Press, is still available for purchase in our marketplace.)

He was a Fellow ad eundum of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and recipient of the Chesley Award of the International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy (2000), the Barnes Award, of the International Society of Obstetric Medicine (2002), ex-President of the International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy (2006-2008) and Founder and Trustee of the charity Action on Pre-eclampsia. Yet it is not these accomplishments that stand out to those members of the Preeclampsia Foundation team like CEO Eleni Tsigas and Director of Communications and Engagement Laney Poye, who were honored to work alongside him on global collaborations and research.

"As others from the APEC team attested in their own tribute to Chris, his gracious and humorous character stood out above all other accomplishments," said Tsigas. "He believed so firmly in the patient-provider relationship that was needed to properly care for preeclampsia patients that it still serves as a model world-wide for patient advocacy organizations like ours. His kind presence and brilliant mind will be sorely missed among the preeclampsia research community."

Our team joins mourners from around the globe in celebrating and honoring the life of Professor Redman.
