Early Onset Preeclampsia and HELLP Syndrome

I was 33, it was my second pregnancy, I was active and had exercised throughout. It was a fairly normal pregnancy up till about 26 weeks, then I got extremely tired again and started gaining weight very quickly, plus my face and hands got very puffy around week 27. I was in the doctor's office for my 28 week check up, the doctor took my blood pressure and wouldn’t even tell me the number it was so bad. I got sent straight to the hospital for urine and blood tests, my doctor also said if I got a headache or vision changes to head straight to the hospital maternity dept. Next day (Saturday) I developed a headache, went to the hospital for a non-stress test, baby was doing fine, but I was admitted overnight to stabilize my blood pressure. I seemed to respond to the medications and I was sent home on Sunday. Monday morning my blood pressure was sky high again even with the medication, this time my numbers were 178/113. I was admitted and given a steroid shot as I had already had a 30 week preterm delivery due to a placental abruption with my first son. I was airlifted to Vancouver so I could be near the children’s hospital, as the hospital I was in couldn’t take care of such an extremely premature baby. I was given magnesium to help prevent seizures from preeclampsia and was able to keep my baby in for another few days. My liver started to succumb to HELLP syndrome 4 days after I was transferred to Vancouver, it was the most excruciating pain I have ever felt, that is after having many broken bones, a previous C-section and a bunch of other injuries during my life. Phillip was born via emergency C-section on September 16th, Thursday at 28+6 weeks, 2lbs 6oz. We spent 8 weeks in 3 different NICU’s he was on breathing support for 6 weeks, he had a few issues with his right lung due to his prematurity but he’s doing amazing now, just turned 11 months old and is 16lbs, he’s still on the small side but he’s catching up quickly, and he’s already trying to walk. Please always listen to your instincts, if I had ignored my headache and other symptoms I don’t think we would’ve made it. Preeclampsia can strike at anytime during the second half of pregnancy, make sure to know the signs and communicate with your health care team so you can get the right treatment when it’s needed. My blood pressure continued to be high and I needed medication for about 6 weeks after delivery, thankfully I don’t have any organ damage, or other lasting effects. But I will have to watch my blood pressure as I’m now at risk for hypertension. I’ve changed my diet and lost weight to help mitigate the risk. I wanted to share my story because I couldn’t find many stories about early onset preeclampsia, it can happen anytime after 20 weeks so please take care of yourselves.
