Our Stories-Our Stories-How to Share Your Story Rachel I went for my routine check at the doctors on the afternoon of my birthday (at 37 wks). The midwife told me I had high blood pressure and, as I had swelling and protein in my urine, she sent me to the hospital. They monitored me for a few hours and said I would have to stay overnight. My partner, Jon went home as everything seemed to be fine, but an hour later they checked my bp again and it had rocketed, so they decided I had to be induced and back Jon had to come! They induced me that evening and sent me to bed. I had mild pains all night so I couldn't sleep, but by the next morning I wasn't really progressing so they broke my waters. I was in quite a lot of pain by the afternoon so I had pethidine, then an epidural that took them 2 hours and numerous attempts to do and then only worked down one side! I was drinking loads but passing nothing, so I had a catheter inserted to keep an eye on that as they were worried about my kidneys and they were having trouble monitoring the baby so I had to have an electrode attached to her head. At about 7pm there were problems with the baby's heartbeat, so I had to have an emergency caesarean by general anesthetic. Alice was born weighing 6lbs 4oz. I was told she had some breathing problems for a short time, but by the time I woke up she was fine. I find the ordeal quite scary, but also very unreal. It seems quite like a dream now! The worst bit for me was not being able to hold her as soon as she was born as I had planned and I can't remember my first hold due to the anesthetic. The main thing is that we both came out of it well. Back to Our Stories
