Hi,
I was born July 21, 1976 at six months and I weighed two pounds nine ounces. I was born by c-section in Gainesville, Florida at Shands to a mother that was twenty one years old and had preclampsia. Fourteen months later my mother had a
c-section with my sister who was born at six and a half months who weighed two pounds thirteen ounces. With my sister, my mother had eclampsia and had
a blood pressure of 250/151. My mother's tubes were tied and she is now forty six years old and has been on blood pressure medicine ever since. My
sister and I are now twenty four and twenty five years old and we have been blessed to be pretty healthy indivduals despite our early entrance in to
the world.
Now fast forward twenty years later I became preganant in November 1996 and the baby was due September 2, 1997. I was sick with the usual morning
sickness at first and then that went away and it seemed to me to be a normal preganancy however, my mother was not so sure by May she said, "to
her I looked swollen." My mother would accompany my boyfriend and I on our visits to the doctor and she would tell the doctor that she had
preeclampsia and she did not think I would be able to carry the baby to full term. By July I went for a visit and my blood pressure was high and
there was protein in my urine. The doctor put me on bed rest and that was all no medication just bed rest and to come in every week. So I did what I
was told and the first two weeks went by ok but on the third week with me being on bed rest only I went in for my weekly visit and there was no
baby's heart beat. My boyfriend and I were told to go straight to the hospital. When we got to the hospital the baby was pronounced dead and I
was put on magnesium sulfate and told I would be induced and have to deliver the baby natural. I delivered the baby the next morning at 6:35
am. He was the cutest baby. My boyfriend and I were both able to hold and kiss him. I got to keep a lock of his hair, his footprints, and two
pictures of him.
I was depressed after I loss that baby because I just could not comprehend why I could not have a baby the normal way. I knew I could get preganant
and after having to deliver the baby natural I knew I could deliver it. I just did not know if I could carry it long enough to get here with out it
going into distress.
Well after I had some counseling I decide to try again in October 1997 I got preganant and the baby was due July 2, 1998. This time I decide to see
a different doctor who specializes in maternal fetal medicine. I was ok until about the end of March when I went for a regular visit and my blood
pressure was high. This doctor decided to put me on bed rest with medication to control my blood pressure methlydopa that I took three times
a day. I was ok open until I went for a visit in my thirty third week and my blood pressure was high even on the medication. I was sent straight to
the hospital again where I was given magnesium sulfate, cervidil, and steroids to try and get the baby's lungs developed. I delivered a baby
boy at 2:33am on May 13, 1998. He weighed three pounds eleven ounces and his lungs were not fully developed so he was taken straight to the NICU.
He stayed there for three weeks and then he came home.
I am so blessed to have Omari Malik Rodman in my life he will be four years
old this May. I am glad that I read that article in GLAMOUR and found this website. I cried after I read those stories it really is great to know that there is
some support for women with this illness during preganacy. My sister has pretty healthy pregancies she has two beautiful daughters that she was able
to deliver at full term and without any complications.
