Fact Sheet
Preeclampsia, sometimes referred to as toxemia or pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), is a disorder that occurs during pregnancy and affects both the mother and the fetus. It is a rapidly progressive condition characterized by elevated blood pressure, swelling and protein in the urine. The cause of preeclampsia is still not fully understood, though the disease was recognized and described nearly 2000 years ago.

The Preeclampsia Foundation, founded in 2000, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to reducing maternal and infant illness and death due to preeclampsia and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy by supporting innovative research, raising public awareness, and helping women access safe reproductive technology, support and care. It is the only patient advocacy organization in the United States dedicated solely to preeclampsia.
