I agree with Trish..I think the only good place to have it calibrated is at your doctor's office. Pharmacy bp machines are notorious for being very wrong. So glad you have found a good one. I think my pulse is weak and irregular too, but the nurses haven't caught on to that, because it gets hard to hear and they think it is a pause and take that as the reading. The one nurse who would always get good bp's from me would listen intently and make sure it was very quiet, because she said it was hard to hear it.

Omron, that's the brand I have. I like it! My cuff won't take the pressure until my wrist is at the proper heart level.

Can I ask what brand they suggested to you? My cuff was slightly off today when I was at the doctor's. I'm going to try new batteries, but just in case. ;)

I agree with others, but with readings like that, please get the monitor checked asap!

I would suggest taking your BP machine to your next OB appt and "calibrate" it against theirs. That way you will know how your home readings compare to the ones they take. Mine was pretty much the same as my OB's but maybe ran about 5 points higher. I have also taken it to my cardiologist & checked it there. They take my BP and then a few minutes later we do it with my cuff.

I too would get the machine checked somewhere. As a side note, I have a "weak" pulse and sometimes it is hard to hear for accurately taking my BP. My husband thinks my PCP can't hear my pulse properly b/c it is usually a little higher at her office. My husband listens very intently when he takes my pressure the manual way. It could be your hb. BUT, since you're pregnant, definitely get that cuff checked! And keep resting and being good to yourself. Glad to hear your BP is great at your doc's!

I would probably take the machine to a pharmacy and check your pressure against their machine.

bp machines-update

Postby joker » Mon Mar 02, 2009 07:18 pm

I have an automatic cuff machine that I got from walgreens in June 07. It says to have it calibrated every two years so it shouldn't need it yet...but I keep getting higher readings on my machine.

Every time I am at the docs my bp is great. Between 115-130/70-80. And when I was in the hospital last week the highest reading was 135/80...but tonight when I got home my machine said 146/98. So I laid down for 20 min and retook it. Then it was 148/100. Crazy. I do have an irregular hb in pregnancy and one of the nurses at the hospital mentioned to me that it did throw her manual reading off at first until she realized my hb was irregular. I wonder if there is something up with my machine or if my hb is throwing it off.

I'm just not sure what to think.

********************************************
I bought a new monitor this morning after talking to a doc friend of mine who suggested that it is probable that the machine is having a hard time reading me because of the irregular hb...so she recommended a specific brand that is known to be able to read accurately with irregular hb's...and low and behold I have gotten consistent readings of 120's/80's for the three pressures I have done this morning. Whew. That makes me feel so much better. Thanks guys for putting up with my crazy!
