My doctor with my last pregnancy explained it was a really difficult line to walk because they don't want to medicate unless it is absolutely essential. That babies tend to tolerate a slow increase in bp much better than high pressure, dropping super low and then still possibly climbing. She also didn't want to mask my bp too much and then have a difficult time watching for PE.

When my bp went from 110/65 to 160/90 in my first trimester she considered it. Put me on labetalol for 2 days, then took me off of it because she didn't want it to drop me too low in my second trimester.... I still don't entirely understand it. I guess it is a tight rope walk that even doctors struggle with.

I have been on labetalol since my first pregnancy so I can't really say what my baseline is. I don't feel the labetalol is great at controlling my BP, but it is all that is pregnancy safe so I can't switch until we are permatnently done with having more kids. Anyways, I do know how high your doctor lets you go is based a lot on your baseline BP. With my last two, I was not to call unless my bottom number got over 110. This time I have been running slightly lower, so I am to call when my bottom number starts getting over 100. If you even get a couple readings of 160/110, I would probably insist on an increase in meds or starting meds, especially since you have no protein yet. It seems sort of odd to wait to even start you on meds.

I was on Labetalol for my entire pregnancy since I have CHTN but around 33 weeks my BP went up to 140s/90s and my MFM immediately did PE labs...if they came back bad he was going to deliver me instead of waiting it out at that point. My labs came back perfect so he increased my BP meds. I had started the pregnancy at 100mg 1x/day, increased to 100mg 2x/day around 30 weeks and then increased to 100mg 3x/day at 34 weeks. My BP continued to rise and I was put on bedrest at home until 36 weeks. If my BP would have gotten to your level while I was on medication, I would have been delivered.

I was put on meds today for the first time this pregnancy. I had at-home readings this morning that bounced from 150/90 to 170/107. In L&D my first reading was 160/96. Lying on my left it came down to 140-something over 80-something. My liver enzymes were good and there was no protein in my urine sample (although I didn't have a 24-hour collection). I'm now taking 100 mg. of Labetalol twice/day.

I know it's soooo frustrating!!! I'm very thankful I was put on bp meds, but I too had a hard time telling my docs that something was wrong. Since my labs were always in normal range. It wasn't until after I delivered did they say oh you have pe and we need to get you on mag asap!!! Even then my labs were normal, but found out that's still pe with all of my symptoms and high bps.

OH I feel you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My highest BP was 178/107 with a HIGH pulse. My average is 150/100. My doctor put me on a category d drug (Atenolol) @25mg every 8 hours! But, I have elevated protein in my urine but my blood work was within standard range.
I'm so sick of them treating me like I'm dying, then "OH well, you're fine..." Just 3 days ago i was to be induced at 37wks, now im to stay on these atenolol 3 times a day until im full term (Another 4wks)...?!!!!!!!!!!?!?!?!?!
My BP today is 138/89 i have elevated protein AND i've been on atenolol every 8 hrs... But to him, I'm fine. Tho last visit i wasn't?!?!?!?!!!
He goes on to tell me, well you don't have symptoms like vision. WHAT?! ALmost every visit I tell him i see sparks, and sometimes i see black (Like being outside in the sun and coming into the house, like that type of black!) and when I told him that, he said, yeah we're not too worried about that...?!?!!!!! HUH?!

I don't think you are overreacting at all. 160/110 is awful high. The Peri's I saw wanted to start meds when the bottom number got over 100 and my baseline was considerably highter than yours about 130/80's. Is she the only doctor you see or is a practice where you can ask one of the other doctors for an opinion. If push comes to shove and you start having any other symptoms I would suggest going to labor and delivery and getting checked out.

My bp is usually around 115/70. Around 12 wks I was feeling awful, checked it and it was 130's/90's. It kept jumping up and down, I had a terrible headache, heart palptations and vision trouble. I kept telling my ob and was told you're fine. At 17 wks I was at work walking to the break room when my vision went black on me and I lost my footing and fell. The next day at my appt, my ob got on the phone with my cardiologist and they decided to put me on labatelol 100mg 2x day. It stopped the palptations, and regulated my bp, but still had the headache and vision trouble. The highest my bp got before meds was 149/99...if you're feeling bad, I'd stress it too your doc. Having a high bp can be harmful during pregnancy. Good luck to you!

What was your BP?

I was wondering what your blood pressure levels were before your doctor put you on bp meds. My baseline has always been 100/60, and now seems to run around 140/90 most of the time. I get spikes of 150/100 and a little higher, but my doctor says she is not gonna worry until it gets above 160/110. That seems really high to me, but wanted some other opinions. When my pressures started rising, my doc said she wouldn't worry until they went over 140/90. When they got there, she said she wouldn't worry until they went over 150/100. They are now there and she says she won't worry until they go over 160/110. UGH! Am I overreacting? I am currently 31 weeks.
