Hi, it is unlikely that the medicines had anything to do with coming down with PE. In fact, recent studies seem to indicate that the whole rollar coster is set in motion at conception and implantation of the placenta. Thus anything after that really isn't going to have much affect on stopping/pushing it along (though it is still possible things will affect it we just don't know yet).

As such, underyling factors, previous case of PE, weight, and advancing maternal age are all risks in getting PE.

As for reoccurance its really hard to say exactly. I was given 20% chance of reoccurance even with early early onset, but not am at about 100% w/o heprin and even with heprin 50-75% chance (2 pregnancies with PIH and underlying blood clotting disorder)

I had my daughter at 30 weeks due to severe PE and HELLP. I am wondering what my chances are of getting it again. I am turning 40 next week and would like to try again, but are my chances increased b/c of my age?
I am also wondering...this may sound crazy, but I had gotten the WORST case of poison ivy all over my legs and arms. I went to ER b/c I couldn't walk, it was so swollen. I was put on 7 meds altogether, including dicloxicillin, in which I had an allergic reaction too. (bumps on my stomach now) I was looking pretty bad. A few weeks later my bp went up and I was forced to deliver. I am wondering if all of the meds had anything to do with it. It was a normal pregnancy and my second pregnancy. My first preg. was perfect.(no PE) Any thoughts?

I'm so sorry for the loss of your little girl. I'm glad you've found us, but sorry that we have to meet under such terrible circumstances.

Hi , i definately know how you feel , i was 24 weeks when i lost my baby girl on the 5th March 2006 due to severe pre-eclampsia and hellp syndrome , prior to that i had been to a high risk specialist where by bp was fine. I have severe upper right abdominal pain, vomitting, blurred vision and my bp was 203/115 , my protein levels were terribly high .The doc has advised me to wait for 9-12months before i try again. I try every day to be strong but it is very difficult especially when i think about it .]Originally posted by pixie323

I'm new to this site. Just over 4 weeks ago, I developed HELLP syndrome. However, I thought I had Norwalks (gastro)due to the abdo pain and vomiting. I stayed at home for 3 days, before going into hospital for hydration. They transferred me directly to one of the large hospital for an emergency c-section (my body was failing, my platelets were 62). My baby girl was born at 24weeks gestation, weighing 428 grams (less than one pound). She fought for 9 days before we had to take her off the ventilation system.

What I want to know is, what are the chances of it happening again?? I had no symptoms 2 weeks before I developed HELLP syndrome. I'm terrified of trying again, but desperately want to have another baby.

Graeme and I aren't planning to try again straight away because I want to give my body time to heal and my husband is terrified of losing me if I fall pregnant again. I just hope that he finds these statistics comforting enough to let us try in 7 to 12 months time. I think when we try again, I'll be more aware of the symptoms and more closely monitored, that if anything happens again, I won't wait 3 days before heading to hospital.

Hi Lisa,

I also posted on your thread in the G&L Forum... I also lost my baby due to PE and HELLPS, and I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. I am also wanting to TTC #2 and I am terrified.
There is a Thread about this topic in the G&L that I posted a few days ago, please read it and you will see that there are many of us that are feeling the same as you, and many who have been there and got through it... Lisa, I wish you peace, health, and strength to try again, and when you do decide we will be there to support and help you along the way... Sending many HUGS to you!!!

Hey Lisa,

I posted to you on the G&L forum. We had the same questions. I too felt just fine and then BAM - out of nowhere I had Severe PE. I agree with Jenn in getting a pre-conception consult. My doctors were very supportive of me, however, I have heard others that have not had such good support. So I would certainly visit with a few until I was comfortable with a good one.

We do have many ladies on here that have gone on to have subsequent pregnancies with no problems at all. My first two pregnancies were pre-eclamptic and I am now pregnant for a third time and don't have ANY signs of PE. We all thought for sure I would have PE by now. But I guess it just goes to show that each pregnancy truly is different.

It is very scary to take that leap again and there is always the possibility of going through it again. Just make certain you are comfortable with your choice and doctor. Hang in there, like I said before, you will get through this and we will be here to assist you if you need and want it.

I'm so very sorry for the loss of your daughter. You may want to visit our Grief and Loss forum. I found a great deal of support there after losing my daughter to HELLP. How is your health now?

Our experts addressed the question of HELLP recurrence in this post: http://www.preeclampsia.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=331

Have you had a preconceptual consult with a perinatologist? I found the most important thing in calming my fears (at least, as much as they possibly could be calmed) was finding a doctor whom I trusted to guide me through a high-risk pregnancy. You may have to interview more than one doctor to get a good fit, but it's well worth the time.

Please let us know how you're doing, and ask any questions you might have. And again, I'm sorry about your baby girl.
