Jen, You may have to search the next larger town/city to find a perinatologist. I see that what appears to be your local hospital does not have an MFM/PERI on staff, this is not unusual. They often practice at major university medical centers. The thing with Peri's is that even if you have to drive a little ways to find one, you usually only have to see them a couple times, and they can co-manage your care with a regular OB in your town where you'll have the majority of your office visits. Some occassions you'll need to drive an hour or so to get to one, but it is worth it for the preliminary work up and to get a plan put in place for your care. So go back to www.smfm.org and check on a larger city. In the meantime I'll see if I can get ahold of anyone in your area.

My platlet count at the time that my ob ran my bloodwork was 97,000. At that time I had no idea what she was talking about. My ob told me that normal was anything over 100,000.

About being pregnant, according to my schedule I'm supposed to get my period this weekend so I'll keep you all posted. In the meantime, I'm actively seeking out a peri. Kara, I tried your website and when I type in where I live nothing came up and no one has emailed back from the NJ area.

Yes, class I is the worst. It's always difficult for me to remember if it's I or III that's worse (technically, I suppose, it's irrelevant as it's all bad). I had class II with 50K (just by a platelet or two [;)] so it's easy for me to remember since I was right smack in the middle! 150-450K is considered 'normal.'

Thanks-I feel so stupid when it comes to this stuff..I really should know more about it. It is hard to find info though. So Class I is the worse with a very low platelet count?? Right?? Normal is anything over 150,000?
Thanks Heather for the info!!

Thanks for answering her questions Heather. I don't think I even knew the difference. :-) We all learn something new around here everyday.

I'm not Kara [;)], but class I is < 50K, class II is 50K-100K, and class III is 100-150K.

Here's a link to AAFP's explanation:

Thanks.

Jennifer, You can visit www.smfm.org to find a board certified Peri/MFM in your area. You may like to visit the NJ forum and ask about recommendations from a mom in your area? We are not allowed to post doctor or hospital names on the forum (for tax and legal reasons), but you can ask that someone email you privately through your profile with recommendations. I think we have a good handful of people in NJ...maybe one will live near you! :-)

Ladies, thank you soooooo much for your advice. You have made things so much clearer to me. I now have a plan (and I'm the kind of person who likes a plan). I'm going to search out a peri in my area and get in asap for testing!!
You girls are the best!!
Thanks again
