We too are struggling with reflux. Emily Kate has had reflux since she was a month old, and now at 9 months it seems to be getting worse. We tried Zantac last week (for the 1st time) and it actually made her spit up even more! I am hoping for a med change next week! Spitting up all day can't be good for her!

Ann Marie,
Sorry I missed this post until now.
Lil' miss J here is 3 1/2 and still sees her GI Dr. for reflux. Poor thing had it since she was a week old. We have gone from Zantac + Reglan, than just Zantac, and something else for short time... now for the past 18 m. Precacid powder, 15mg daily.
But thats when I can get her to take it. She's no dumby, wised up to the fact it's medicine.

The reflux is not as bad as it was when she was an infant. Now it's just when food doesn't agree with her, or she's been running and jumping around like a maniac. :o)

But I just noticed you said it happens at feeding time. Have you seen an allergist?
Turns out J was allergic to milk, soy, rice, and wheat. Makes finding formula fun!!! But after all was said and done we got one that didn't contribute to reflux, and helped her to grow.
Just a thought.
Best wishes.

Ann Marie,

Unfortunately, Ainsley's reflux got worse and peaked at about 6 months, stayed the same until 12 months and gradually decreased. We found that compounded Prilosec was her miracle drug. I know how rough it is listening to a poor baby cry and spit up all the time. It is a miracle we all made it through!!

Take care!!

Hi All,

Talked to the pediatrician today. Taking Luke off of the Zantac and trying Previcid instead. Hopefully it will help. She said it is not uncommon for reflux to get worse around this age. I hope this works!!

zantac worked great for bella, and she was on it until she was about 6 mo.
They uppd the dose as she grew.
Lots of friends with preemies and f/t babes that I know were unsuccessful w/ zantac and previcid was thier wonder drug.
good luck and hang in there. I remember what it was like with the projectile and always having to bring both a change for her and I!!

Thanks Jennifer and Jaxon's Mom,

It just makes me feel better that others have experienced this and that it has been a roller coaster for others too. When he is doing well I feel like we turned the corner and then he gets bad and I think what am I doing wrong. I'm going to call the pediatrician on Tuesday about a medication change. I too have read Reglan is bad stuff and I won't put him on it if that's what she offers. Prevacid sounds like it is better tolerated. We'll see what she says. His weight is fine 50% percentile...14lbs at 14 weeks (not bad for a 5lb 13oz start:). Thanks for the tip about the wedge for sleeping. He's been sleeping in his carseat in his crib almost since birth. Laying flat does not work. He may grow out of his carseat before he outgrows the reflux though so it's a great thing to know. We started him on cereal too about 2 weeks ago, just a tablespoon or so at night. He sleeps better at night but I can't say it helped the reflux. Anyway thanks for your tips and encouragment. I feel much better about things[:I].

Hi Anne Marie- So sorry to hear about Luke's reflux. Its such a bad thing for both parents and babies. Kyle had reflux pretty bad - he cried just about all day and night and spit up or threw up about 15-20 times a day(!) until they put him on Zantac. No one told us they had to up the meds as he gained weight (makes sense, but we didn't think of it while he was screaming again). Seems the solution is not that easy for you as it seems that upping the dosage has not helped. One thing we did to help with sleeping was to buy him one of those wedge-foam "bed" and it helped incredibly. He was lucky that the Zantac worked for him. We were able to take him off the meds at 5 1/2 months when we started solids and it finally cleared up for the most part at about 7 or 8 months- no more bibs all day long. He's 10 months now and only has an occasional episode when he is jostled too much after eating. One doc told us to start solids at 3 months b/c that might settle his tummy, but our thought was that starting solids too soon might predispose him to food allergies or obesity... I would suggest doing some research on meds. When we looked into different drugs, we read some terrible things about a drug called Reglan. See if you can get a GI consult. How is his weight gain? Kyle was in the 25th percentile so no one was too worried. Since his reflux is better he shot right up to the 50-75th percentile!

When all is said and done, you will have lots of opinions and 'advice.' You should just arm yourselves with info and make the decision that is best for you and Luke. I hope he feels better soon. Keep us posted, ok?

Hi Anne Marie

Just wanted to say we have been battling the reflux with Jaxon for over a year now.... Jaxon is on Prevacid (30mg/daily) + Gaviscon (as needed daily) and it was working well for a few mths and then its not again so its back to the GI we go... It seems like 2 steps forward and 3 steps back with this reflux.... The whole feeding thing with us is terrible too, b/c he's on bottles and solids too.... We put him in the highchair and he knows so he starts to scream & fuss..... He hates eating and its so hard to get him to take anything... Oh and the vomiting... Its so hard to see them suffer.... :(

I hope your little guys gets better really soon.... If you have any tricks of the trade that you think might help with us pls help!! Sorry I couldn't have been of more help to you.. Does Luke see a GI specialist? Ours has been very helpful..

Thanks Sara,

It's not the worst thing in the world. The hard part is it is not every feeding and some days are worse than others. It's embarassing when you are feeding him in public and he's screaming and everyone stops to see what you are doing to the poor child. I feel badly for him too because he's hungry, but it hurts to eat. Hopefully things will get better soon. Too bad our pediatrician is off on Mondays. Oh well[:)]

Hi Ann Marie,

I presonally don't have any experience with reflux, so this won't be much help to you, but I know there are several people who have posted in the past about it, so someone with more knowledge is bound to chime in soon.

I just wanted to let you know that I'm sorry that you are having to deal with this. It certainly does not sound like much fun. I'm sorry your little guy is so uncomfortable, and I hope that your doc gets things figured out soon.

Keep us posted...
