I wondered that about the Rainbow Baby too. Glad you asked (Laura) and shared (Sabrina). I love it!

Sabrina,

I really like that. Rainbows are also a symbol of hope for the future, which is certainly appropriate here.

And Judy is right... they do seem a little bit extra special, don't they?

Oh that makes sense! That's really sweet. I even did a google search and didn't know what to make of it. Interesting!

That's interesting. I've seen it used on other boards in a different way - as a description of kids deemed to have peculiarly perceptive intuitions. But never related to loss. Thanks for explaining.

Melanie has it. It's the baby after a loss according to the loss group I am on. It's meant to mean the rainbow at the end of a storm (tough time). She will always be a rainbow baby so it's not a in utero thing or birth thing because she is the first living child after a loss.

Sabrina! This has been driving me nuts for an age, and I can't resist any more! What is a rainbow baby? Is Caitlyn still a Rainbow Baby after birth or is it an in-utero thing?

It is making me crazy because since we've been working in the GLBT community at work I think about them when I see a 'rainbow' and I know that can't be it. :-)

Judy I had no idea!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah I figure I won't mention it and just let it sit for awhile. I definitely will have to get tubes tied or something before I leave the hospital.

I'm not surprised. ;o) I'm sure you already know this, but don't badger him about it. Just enjoy Cate and let him recover from all the upheaval & worry while you were on bedrest. If he doesn't feel like he has to come up with a million reasons as to *why* you shouldn't have more he won't be defensive. A few times my dh would say he was done and I'd say "okay" and leave the subject alone. You do know that I have given birth to 11 living children right?
