Kara, I am glad that you finally have a date in place, so you can start to prepare yourself. I will start a prayer chain for you and sweet Avery a couple days before. It is amazing and I hope it brings you comfort and peace. Just email me the details...the time and hospital where she is having surgery. We pray for you for 6 weeks, or as long as you need. I am delighted that you are letting me do this for you...I am so glad I can help in some way :)
JacobKaden, Thanks for the advice. This particular surgery is quite different from what they do to the little ones in the nicu and won't affect her vocal cords...it passes through the arteries into the heart and closes off the artery from the inside, rather than fromt he outside like they do in NICU. Sorry to hear his vocal cord got knicked...hope he adjusts easily when he's older...and good to know for future reference for other's going through it.
One thing to ask about is whether there is still a risk to damage to her left vocal cord with the PDA closure. This is a risk when the surgery is done to preemies shortly after their birth, not sure if it would apply in Avery's case? Apparently the nerve to the left vocal cord sits very close to the PDA and in some cases, is literally wrapped right around the PDA. Our son had his PDA closed at about 6 weeks after he was born at 26 weeks and his left vocal cord is still paralyzed, which they suspect was due to the PDA, not his prematurity. Children and adults apparently can function and vocalize with one working vocal cord, but they need to learn to compensate and may speak with a bit of a raspy voice. Don't want to worry you unnecessarily, but just to learn from our experience.
I've been meaning to e-mail you and ask about a surgery date, but I've been so lazy!!! Glad you finally have a date and eventually all this worry will be over and you can enjoy the holiday!!! Keep us updated!!
