Good news to hear!! With a family history of CHT & heart disease and my recently discovered allergies to both beta blockers and ace inhibitors my cardiologist basically said I'd be up a creek if I ever developed heart disease. Great. So it's nice to know I've done something that may help my risk by BF! I have almost 3 years "banked" if it's all kids combined. Wish I could still be BFing Ali but I ran out of BP med options and had to quit at 11 months. :(

And wow - WTG Patty!

Gosh I hope the effect is cumulative. I have a strogn family history of heart disease and am still on bp meds but by the earliest I am done feeding Randall(I always nurse for a minimum of 2 years)I will have 11 years of lactating banked so maybe I am will get some protection out of that.

That is great news! I nursed my son for 14 months and I'm still nursing my 10 month old dd. Hope it is 2 years total because I plan on giving up nursing in a couple of months. I also have a family history of heart disease so this gives me some hope.

I was planning on breastfeeding until he was 2 or more so that is great! I think I was 5 when I stopped nursing! Ack.....that is a bit too old for me

..."though, of course, many of us are just plain *unable* to breastfeed given the medical strikes against us."

You got that right!

Whew! With PE in both pregnancies and a family history on BOTH sides of hypertension, this is yet another reward for continuing to nurse Henry at 2.5 years. :)

Thanks. I've gotten lots of criticism for contininuing to nurse - especially over here in Germany. It's nice to know that not only has it been beneficial for Henry but it's also good for me!

Oh well. If it *might* be, it's good enough for me :)

I just found the full text of the paper, and it says

The small numbers of cases in analyses stratified by parity did not allow us to distinguish between the effects of long lactation for a single pregnancy vs shorter durations for multiple pregnancies.

So they don't know if it's equally protective or not. :-)

The "lifetime total of 2 years or longer" means that if I breastfeed 2 different kids for a year after each of their respective births, I get the benefit?
