This combination of problems is not uncommon among preeclamptic women. An elevated AFP is associated with an increased risk for growth restriction and PIH. Patients with PIH are also at a higher risk of developing placental infarcts - most likely resulting from the abnormal circulation present in these patients. The two vessel cord likely was not associated with any of the other problems during the pregnancy.

IUGR+ infarcts + PIH +AFP

Postby lindaso1 » Fri Sep 17, 2004 05:48 pm

Hopefully you can provide some clarification. My last pregnancy, I delivered at 30 wks after they determined there had been insufficient fetal growth. It started with an elevated alpha feta protein level, SGA, two vessel cord and then I developed PIH. I was put on hospital bedrest with no improvement. Following emergency c section birth, the placenta was found to have multiple infarcts. My doctor thinks that there was something wrong with the placenta all along and that the PIH was a by-product of this, so unlikely to re-occur in my next pregnancy. Have you had any experience with this combination of problems before?
