My Gracie was born at 33 weeks at 3 lb 7 oz. The nurses kept saying the rule of thumb was that she would go home 2 weeks before her due date. She only stayed in the NICU for 15 days however. She had a little bit of jaundice and had to maintain her body temp. No vent or oxygen. She was 4 lb 5 oz when she came home.

The pressure from being squeezed through the birth canal helps to get rid of the fluid in the babies lungs, further, its beleived that the stress of vaginal delivery helps to prep the baby for the outside world (either through adrenaline or speeding up the process) in compared to c section deliveries.

In my hospital... The rule is as long as the baby can keep it's temp, feed well they can go home no matter what the weight is. I have seen 3 pounders go home with their mom's.....

Sandra,
I think most of the time hospitals want the baby to weigh over 4 lbs when they go home, it seems like that is around the magic number when a baby can start regualting it's temp. But, it's not always true.

If you are having the steriod shots, I think there is a good chance the baby could go home with you if she is big enough. Most babies lungs are strong enough at 34 weeks, but there are always those who are not. But it sounds like you are having a V delivery, so that will help strengthen her lungs as she comes through, so maybe no need for the shots...

I hope she is a really healthy big baby and gets to go home with you! Avoiding the NICU is always a big plus! (Although it's not the end of the world either)
good luck,
Kara

Nicky came home a couple of weeks before his due date...his last issue was maintaining body temp & reaching 4 lbs.

Kalen stayed 5 days in the NICU and was only in there for blood sugar issues...luckily (?) I had an infection and also stayed 5 days, so he got to come home w/ me. :D

Good luck Sandra! Do you know how big they estimate the baby to be?
