Welcome Joanne! Those are some scary bp numbers! I am not a medical person at all but I've read a lot of PE research. I wonder if this research would help you? In your shoes I would print these abstracts for your cardiologist and consultant:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11530124
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19165669

These links are to research from a high-risk pregnancy specialist in Washington state, using the drug Atenolol. Your cardiologist and consultant would have to decide if you were a candidate for Atenolol - it is a category D drug in pregnancy because it can cause fetal growth restriction.

I also like this paper a lot - full text
http://hyper.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/full/51/4/960
on antihypertensive drugs in pregnancy.

Good luck and let us know what your doctors say, and please stick around and ask more questions and share your experiences!

That is a lot of medication so i can see why they wouldn't up it. I would lay on your left side as much as possible until your appt. I know that when you are hypertensive before pregnancy, your BP can run higher. My peri used to say that my body was used to it so it wasn't as dangerous. I had numbers that high and higher much of my first pregnancy. When is your caridologist appt? Hopefully soon.

Aldomet is one that I see mentioned on this board fairly often.

Welcome! I wish I knew what to suggest! That's a lot of BP meds to be on & still not have it control your BP. I hope you can get in to see a cardiologist ASAP. Are you monitoring your BP at home?

help with my meds please!!!

Postby olivias_mum » Tue Feb 12, 638943 12:55 pm

hiya, my little girl was 12 weeks prem due to pre eclampsia/fetal distress and im now 13 weeks pregnant with my second baby. I saw the midwife on thrusday who sent me to hospital because of my bp, i saw the gynae consultant and she said she needed to increase my meds but didnt know what to do as they were all maximum dosage so asked me to come back on monday to see my obs consultant. I saw him yesterday and my bp was 160/110 he said he needed to increase something but didnt know what to change as they are all maximum dosage so he got the medical reg, he said he didnt know what to do as it isnt his area so they basically said go home and wait for a referrall letter to the cardiologists!they didnt change any of my meds or increase anything and just sent me on my way so im waiting for this letter but in the meantime walking around with BP through the roof! At the moment im on Methyldopa 1000mg 3 times a day (maximum),Labetalol 800mg 4 times a day(over maximum, max dosage is 2400 a day) Nifedipine 40mg twice a day(maximum) Doxazosin 8mg once a day (which isnt recommended in pregnancy) and aspirin 75mg once a day.2 weeks ago i was admitted to hospital with BP 200/120 and was on IV labetalol 50 mg until it came down.Does anyone know any other meds that are safe in pregnancy as none of the doctors here seem to. I know i can have IV labetalol or IV hydralazine but they are only safe in the short term and i have 11 weeks to go just til viability!I had 2+ protein in my dipstick on monday which was sent off for a protein/creatanine ratio and im waiting for the results of a 24 hour urine test. I have raised BP outside of pregnancy due to kidney problems but it gets worst as soon as i get pregnant. Thanks :)
