Were they worried about Down Syndrome because the quad screen came back with abnormal numbers? There's been some preliminary work into using the quad screen as a kind of diagnostic test, because problems with the placenta can cause variations in some of those same markers. We've had a number of posters with elevated risk for DS and genetically normal babies who went on to develop preeclampsia.

No underlying conditions were found. My doctor said that she thought I had a 40% chance of reoccurance. The specialist said 25%. Other than watching my BP the only thing that they said would be done differently was checking the baby's size. My son also had IUGR so I had several ultrasounds the first prenancy but the Dr.s were more concerned that he would have DOWNS. PE was never mentioned. They have suggested taking a baby aspirin. It is scary for me because I had it so early and they have no idea why so I just do not see how they can know if I will get it again. I am sure that everyone has thsi concern as PEs cause is not known. Thanks for your comments!

Welcome Angel. I am so glad that you and your son are ok. You have come to the right place for support and info on PE. I had my son at 26weeks due to PE and HELLP 14 months ago. We also spent 3 months in the NICU and are fine now too (thank God). My husband and I are just starting to get serious about thinking about trying again. We did uncover a possible underlying condition and it has been treated and is no longer an issue, however, during my recent visit with an MFM, I was told I have a 50% chance of getting PE again. It would most likely occur later in the preg (but considering 26weeks last time, that is not too comforting). I have read about many women who have been told the same thing, however, as you read the stories of the women on this forum, you will find a lot of courage with all the great outcomes reported in 2nd pregnancies. Have you been tested for underlying conditions? Has your doctor discussed how he would monitor you in another preg? There is so much great info in this forum and you are absolutely not alone. Welcome!

Hi Angel. I had a milder experience and was induced at 37 weeks. We were fortunate and our son was extremely healthy. I am now almost 37 weeks pregnant with our second and lots of people tried to reassure us that it was unlikely we would experience pre-e again since it was mild, I had no known risk factors, it developed later and I was with the same partner. Well, now we are dealing with it again.

Everything was going great. My BP was super low and then 3 weeks ago it went up to around 120/80, which is high for me. It's been climbing ever since. I've yet to see pressures as high as I did with my son, but we're hovering around 140/95(+). We're looking at an induction at the end of next week.

I don't know if this is helpful or not, but you're not alone. I wish you the best of luck and I'm so glad your son is healthy.

New and thinking about trying again

Postby acovington » Sun Sep 26, 638917 9:04 pm

My name is Angel and I developed PE around the beginning of my third trimester. The only symptoms that I had were headaches and high blood pressure. I later developed protein in my urine. My son was born almost 3 monthes early. He is fine now but we spent 3 months in the NICU and he had severe premature lungs, pneumonia and he developed a bacterial infection in the hospital. I had no pre-existing health conditions and other than it being my first pregnancy I had no other known risk factors. My husband and I are thinking of trying again and I am terrified. I have spoken to a doctor that specializes in PE but he only confirmed that since they do not know why I got it it is impossible to know if I will get it again. I am having mixed feelings. Has anyone had a similiar situation with success or any information that would be useful?

Any comments are appreciated!
