| Never heard of it being linked. I know that women whose progesterone levels are too low will miscarry. |

Delissa, progesterone is a very important hormone that supports the pregnancy until the placenta takes over at around 8-10 weeks. As mentioned above, low progesterone might be a sign for miscarriage. However, it is a controversial topic among some OB's as to whether low progesterone is the cause of the miscarriage or the result of an impending miscarriage. Sometimes progesterone is given to women in the 2nd & 3rd trimesters if they suspect PTL or incompetent cervix.
I take progesterone injections during the first several weeks (10+/-) of my pregnancies because I have to do IVF to get pregnant and it is standard protocol for IVF patients. After I lost my daughter I searched everywhere to see if there was a link between progesterone & PE. I didn’t find anything linking the two, but maybe someone else has seen something.

| I had extremely low progesterone with Cate and absolutely believe that if I had not supplemented, I would have lost her. I also had preterm labor with her that was being stopped with procardia. I saw the links you are talking about when I was pregnant and it is controversial. Something about the placenta not implanting right, leads to the progesterone not producing. Of course pe is a problem with the placenta. Even now that I am NOT pregnant, my ob just put me on a 5 x's a dose of progesterone because my IUD perforated and had to be removed. |

| I had very low progesterone with my first pregnancy, started taking supplements, but they weren't soon enough so I miscarried early in the first trimester. With Eian, my doctor didn't hesitate at all to put me on supplements. Actually when I called for the appointment she called them in for me before even checking my levels. If I have anymore pregnancies I'm sure they will be treated the same way. |

The only post I can find in the Experts forum on the topic of progesterone is here, and is mostly about how women with chronic hypertension will see their pressures rise if they're supplemented with progesterone. (This is why I'm not a candidate for hormonal birth control.)
IIRC progesterone competes with aldosterone for a receptor that's involved in maternal volume expansion. Insofar as there's any link with PE, that might be it. But there's no data suggesting a benefit from supplemental progesterone in PE prevention. |

Thanks all of you. Caryn I TOTALY agree on the hormonal BC. I will NEVER take that again, now that I know the dangers of it! Just to run this by everyone, I saw my OB this morning. She says progesterone does *not* have anything to do with pre-e. It could help keep you pregnant though. FFT |
