| So, apparently my platelets are falling. They were at 150k last Monday, Thursday they were at 133k. We're awaiting results from today... So, I'm wondering how worried I should be about this? I also am a little upset that they told me my labs were just fine and find out this morning from my favorite resident that I've had a pretty big drop in platelets. I'm assuming the results from today's labs will be an indication of what they will do. I would imagine if they've dropped again they won't likely wait very long to deliver. I don't know what my other numbers are but I have asked for a copy of my last couple of labs and today's so I can see if anything else is off..... I hate not having a grasp on my own medical information. |

Bummer! I think a trend downward does generally show they are not going in the right direction. Most likely they will intervene before it becomes a major problem--unless things start to move really quickly. I had asked my doctor at my last appt about my pregnancy and if I had HELLP or close to it, and the answer was that I did not because my labs were not bad enough but he did note that my platelets did fall some, which indicated it was a possibility I was headed in that direction had I not delivered when I did.
I hope it moves slowly, and that they keep you updated regularly! I think they just aren't used to patients knowing about this stuff, therefore don't give the info they should. |

| Is this in addition to having PE too? I'm new so I don't know everyone's story yet. My sister has low platelets with her pregnancies but no PE and they gave her a steroid to make it stop falling. She otherwise had a normal pregnancy and delivery. |

I'm pretty sure you can have low platelets in a "normal" pregnancy, so long as they are not really low.
133k is not really low (I went down to 42, and many have gone lower), but of course any downward trend in really worrying if you've had PE/HELLP before.
I hope they hold up for you, let us know?

I am in the hospital on bed rest with severe preeclampsia. I'm still waiting for the results of today's labs....
In other news... I'm on the monitor right now and contracting every 4 minutes or so. (Not super unusual for me).... I think my cerclage is going to come out this week, regardless of what platelets do! |

| Oh, and just FYI I'm 35w5d weeks according to ultrasound-- and 36w1d according to ovulation. |

| Sounds like you are headed into HELLP. If you start to have ANY pain around your ribs, front or back....let them know...TRUST ME:) |

I believe normal is right around 120K, so a doctor wouldn't necessarily look at those results and flag them, but still that's quite a drop. Has your resident indicated what a follow up plan might be? Will they test more often? Will they be looking at some other blood work? Have they thought about moving up your due date?
I'm not sure I'd be so quick to say you are heading into help, but I sure would want to know what the plan was. |
She's married to Mr. Spit, mum to 2 dogs, 2 cats, and baby boy in heaven. Gabriel was born 15 weeks early, as a result of severe pre-eclampsia, in December 2007. He was here for 30 minutes and carried home on the arms of the angels.
