MgSO4 seems to better protect the red cell membrane against lipid peroxidation than other SO4= and Cl- salts. These results indicate that the changes in the lipid peroxidation of the red cell ghosts and their Ca-ATPase activity are a result of changes to the cell membranes.

So perhaps one reason mag sulfate helps preeclamptics is that it slows down the breakdown of the red blood cell membranes by the course of the disease. (Which means more oxygen to your brain, yay! and fewer cell fragments floating around doing stuff they shouldn't be doing.)
