Re: White blood cells and protein in my urine with no infect

See, if I remember correctly, the protein can be part of preeclampsia, but the white blood cells are usually indicative of infection. The question with the protein is how much- the dips aren't reliable, so I'd ask for a 24 hour urine test to see exactly how much protein you're talking about. The oth...

Re: What does it mean to be an "empowered patient"?

So interesting that you asked this, because it is something I think about frequently! In my first pregnancy, I saw as things deteriorated over the course of a month- pathological swelling, BPs rising above my baseline, then above 'hypertension' and then beyond- and reported the symptoms to my midwif...

Re: Proof that stress in pregnancy is bad?

You know they haven't thought through it-- had that been the case there are SO many ways it would have shown up in prevalence rates- would we see more in homeless women? Unemployed women looking for work? They're pretty stressed, right? Babies born after parents have separated? Moms who have kids wi...

Re: "Advanced Maternal Age" and preeclampsia

Tracy, nice to "see" you again! Have you talked with your MFM about it? You could be in spectacular shape for 40, with your 40 closer to my 25- especially if you don't have chronic hypertension or any other chronic disease. Captain (Catherine) was an older mom, and it appeared that her PE was less r...

Re: ? about reoccurance in subsequent pregnancy

I think the discrepancy might be in how the statement is phrased- I've seen a really low recurrence rate, too- at 5% from reputable sources, but because HELLP syndrome is so relatively rare, that 5% is still much higher than women who have never had preeclampsia before. I seem to remember something ...

Re: Anybody know much about atherosis?

I've not heard of this term in a placental report- so did some digging. I think this may be different than atherosclerosis, which sounds more like what you're describing. This link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3283724 talks about atherosis being "maternal vascular lesion" which could suggest ...

Re: 35 Weeks. Creeping BPs and hyperreflexia

Meh- term is overrated ;) I've heard of getting some symptoms but not others... but those reflexes are reason for pause. Even if nothing else develops, keep an eye out for all those CNS symptoms and be overly cautious rather than not. And don't forget your kick counts until thursday, k?

Re: +1 protein today

I am so sorry to hear that! When looking at those dips, a few things to keep in mind- the dip isn't the end of the project- most docs would have followed it up with a 24 hour urine, since the dips aren't fool proof. The concentration of your urine (specific gravity) can either make it look like you ...

Re: blurry vision

The shape of your eyes changes during pregnancy, so it is common to have visual changes in pregnancy- but blurred vision in the context of preeclampsia is caused by intercranial swelling squeezing the optic nerve- a bad, bad thing. While it can be normal to have differences during pregnancy, if you ...
